Description
This seminar is about how questions of value have been articulated since the financial crisis that started roughly15 years ago and into the ecological crisis that has been accelerating in recent years. Questions of value articulate themselves through modalities as different as price, management and aesthetics, and they have systemic consequences for how we know, feel, and react to crises that have become continuous. The naturalization of social forms such as money is an embedded norm in capitalist modernity, and this ranges from concepts such as ‘human capital’ to today’s metrics of ‘natural capital’ and the failed use of market-based incentives to ‘offset’ the dire impact of capitalist accumulation on biophysical reality. At the same time, a dialectical history of the reflection of money in nature takes note of the erosion of older forms of domination and exploitation by the abstractions enabled by the commodity as a universal measure, including its critical antagonists, such as art and anti-capitalist social movements. Perhaps even the invocation of totalities such as art or capitalism is an index of the paradoxical freedoms that inhere in such abstractions. Thus this seminar will take ‘value’ and ‘totality’ as its philosophical touchstones, even while we observe money admiring itself in the mirror of the world it has made.
