Art and Class Relations. Specters, Motifs, Subjects
Stefanie Kitzberger
Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2023W, scientific seminar (SEW), 2.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S04733
Description
„Instead of artists being proletarianized, Hardt and his co-thinkers in effect hold that the entire proletariat has been aestheticized.”
(Ben Davis, 95. Thesis on Art and Class, Chicago: Haymarket Books, 2013, p. 11)
How does contemporary art engage with aspects of class, class relations, class struggle and their multifaceted intersections with other categories of social and cultural analysis such as race, gender, ability (…)? If art continues to express the worldview of the dominant class(es) qua commodification, how can artists, through their artworks, engage in a radical critique of capitalism?
In joint discussions of selected readings, artworks and exhibitions we aim to address these and other questions in order to unravel various means and strategies employed by artists to comment on, challenge and transform structures, notions and images of exploitation and marginalization. Our explorations will furthermore extend to examining the dynamics that unfold between forms of representation, the engagement with the conditions of (aesthetic) production and the effects of institutionalization.
Examination Modalities
- regular attendance (absence of 2 sessions max.)
- active participation, including preparations of all readings and engagement in discussions (grading: 50%)
- a written paper (en/de) or artistic research on a topic chosen from the seminar (grading: 50 %)
