Kunstkritik

Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2023W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04732

Description

What does it mean to write about art and what forms of thinking and writing about art shape our understanding of art criticism today? Art criticism is regularly described as 'in crisis' or even pronounced dead, but it nevertheless endures - albeit in ever-changing forms and new media.

This seminar is dedicated to an active engagement with art criticism through reading as well as writing. Participants should be prepared not only to discuss other people's texts, but also to work on their own texts in the seminar, to discuss them and to work on them together with colleagues, to proofread and edit them.

Blocked every two weeks, the seminar will become a workshop, allowing us not only to discuss and write texts, but also to visit exhibitions together and learn from guest lecturers from the field. Historical forms and methods of art criticism will be examined as well as the very practical ways in which the contemporary media landscape functions.

The course is taught in German and English, depending on the needs of the students. Even for students who speak German, knowledge of English is required for the predominantly English-language reading.

Please send your binding registration for the seminar by October 1, 2023 on base AND by e-mail to kathrin.heinrich@uni-ak.ac.at with a short excerpt of a self-written art critical text of no more than 1,000 characters. The seminar is limited to approx. 20 participants.

The first date will be on October 24, and the first required reading will be sent out in advance to participants via email in October.

Among other things, we will read numerous exhibition reviews from various media as well as texts from the following publications, which can be considered as preliminary reading recommendations:

Elkins, James. What happened to Art Criticism? Chicago: Prickly Paradigm, 2011.

Haylock, Brad und Megan Patty (Hgs). Art Writing in Crisis. London: Sternberg Press, 2021.

Menke, Christoph, Isabelle Graw und Thomas Cannaday (Hgs.). The value of critique: exploring the interrelations of value, critique, and artistic labour. Frankfurt am Main: Campus Verlag, 2019.

Söntgen, Beate und Julia Voss (Hgs.). Why Art Criticism? A reader. Berlin: Hatje Cantz, 2022.

Williams, Gilda. How to write about Contemporary Art. London: Thames & Hudson, 2019.

Examination Modalities

Mandatory for the completion of the seminar are:

- regular participation (80%)

- active participation in reading and discussion, writing and discussion of own texts
