Description
Archives facilitate the consolidation, preservation and accessibility of materials and knowledge practices. As such, they give material form to events, ideas and questions and provide places for the investigation of purposefully created collections as well as randomly obtained convolutions. The concept of archive, however, does not only encompass (spatially fixed or digital) depots and the materials they contain, but, more fundamentally, the way knowledge and history are structured in societies. In this understanding formulated by Michel Foucault, archives are epistemological tools: they provide criteria and categories of knowledge and determine the classification and selection of materials. The term „archive“ therefore encompasses not only museums, libraries, historical materials and digital archives, but also the discourses, conventions and algorithms that guide our access to them.
Examination Modalities
Mandatory for the degree are:
- Regular participation (80%),
- active participation, including reading and discussion of contributions, as well as
- a written paper on a topic chosen from the seminar.
The seminar can also be taken as a BA seminar ("Studienfach Lehramt").
