Kunst der Moderne: Globale Perspektiven (Kunstgeschichte 3)

Eva Kernbauer
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2023W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04728

Description

This course offers an introduction to the emergence of Modern Art (1800-1950) in the global context. It focuses on the formation of Europe and European Art as cultural entities framed and shaped by political and economic struggle, emerging nationalism, colonialism and global expansion. We will also look at art centres and practices in East and South Asia, North- and Central America and in Africa.

In distinct chapters, we will examine the transformation of art in the course of Modernism: exhibitions and art journals proliferate as new art publics emerge; visuality is being transformed by the experience of modern urban space; non-Western art is appropriated in Orientalism and Primitivism; new media such as photography and film are being introduced; collaborative, performative and spatial art practices emerge. We will specifically look at feminist art histories, at intermedial approaches, at interconnections of art and design including the notion of the "Gesamtkunstwerk", and the modernist concept of art as an experiment for social change.

Examination Modalities

Written exam, to be completed optionally in English and German. Three exam dates are offered at the end of January and at the beginning and end of March 2024. After that, no more exam dates will be offered, as the lecture changes every year.

Please register for the first exam at sophie.geretsegger@uni-ak.ac.at.

Comments

This course is taught in GERMAN. All introductory courses in Art History (Kunstgeschichte 1-4) are held alternately in German and English, with the English course "Global Modern Art / Kunstgeschichte 3" following in Fall 2024.

The lecture is accompanied by a tutorial course led by Paula Netzl, offering support for any issues or question you might have regarding the lecture or on how to prepare for the exam. Sessions to discuss specific topics, artworks and/or texts will be organized. Contact Paula at paula.netzl@uni-ak.ac.at.

A reference collection with books and texts on the course is set up in the library. A detailed bibliography is stored online in Nextcloud, as well as many texts and other materials for the course. The image scripts are uploaded weekly online as well. Registation to the course will activate the access to the Nextcloudfolder.

All images can also be found with additional information in the IMAGE image database (access here in the Base Angewandte, see "Image" tab above).
