From Upper Paleolithic to Late Middle Ages (Kunstgeschichte 1)

Description

This lecture offers some orientation in the very broad field of artistic practices from prehistory to late Middle Ages. We will focus on basic questions that come along with material and artistic production, on different functions of cultural artefacts: We will explore ways of using images in different contexts and periods of time and deal with the respective significance of images, ornamentation, monumental sites as well as small objects and their roots in cultic or religious practices.

Examination Modalities

Written examinations on 29th of January and 4th of March.

Oral exams may be given by appointment in exceptional cases.

This lecture is accompanied by a tutorial led by Eva-Maria Scherl (further information tba).
