Description
The planet is on fire (or sinking in floods), and digital culture must accept the reproach of having stood by and watched for too long. Or even more seriously, of having contributed decisively to this global conflagration. Ecology and digital culture have a number of historically far-reaching, mutually productive relationships with one another that need to be reassessed in light of the current threats. Indeed, the question arises as to whether a combination of ecological sustainability and correspondingly coordinated digitalization efforts is best able to counteract the negative scenarios that cannot be dismissed any longer. In short: whether an “art of the eco-digital” could be the salvation of us all.
In the seminar we want to explore prospects and promises, but also dead ends and blind spots of such an art. The focus will be on artistic and theoretical approaches that put forth visionary, but at the same time critical models of such a cross-domain-endeavors. Landmarks of this world-connecting exploration are, to name a few: ‘entanglement’, more-than-human ecology, ‘geontology’, post-extractivism, and AI-based sustainability. All of these aspects (plus more) will be discussed in detail, testing out fresh, unconsumed forms of presentation of theory and art.
The aim of the seminar is thus to open portals to new spaces of thought and experience, where digitality and ecology enter into new, hitherto unthought-of connections with each other on an artistic basis.
