This course provides versatile tools with which to develop critical thinking. The student learns to situate their own artistic practice/interest in broader contexts in the field of art. The course surveys the current lexicon of art and aesthetics, and emphasizes queer feminist and decolonial perspectives that challenge existing paradigms. Texts from Gloria Anzaldua, Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang, Audre Lorde, Sarah Ahmed and others will enrich class discussions and practical outcomes. The course examines the relationship between art practices and conceptual thinking from various perspectives and focuses on the analysis of aesthetic, ethical and social values which relate to a broader cultural reality.

Grades are based on 30% Attendance (including exhibition visits), 40% Engagement (in discussion), and 30% Projects and fulfillment over the semester.
