Since the 1990s, digital technologies have become increasingly ubiquitous in everyday life. They have reshaped the ways in which people work, shop, travel, date, or consume and produce media. Digital media are not immaterial. They rely on hardware, infrastructure, and human labor. The spaces through which data and bodies circulate are continuous rather than separate, with the normative tendencies of digital technologies feeding back into embodied experiences. But the omnipresence and convenience of digital technologies often make it difficult to pay attention to how they function. In this class, we will study texts and artworks that reflect on a set of overlapping key aspects of how recent digital technologies participate in and (re-)shape socio-material relationships: Embodiment, circulation, surveillance, and machine perception and so-called artificial intelligence.
The readings will range from artists writings to science and technology studies (STS). Artists and authors we will discuss include, among others, American Artist, Simone Browne, Kate Crawford, Donna Haraway, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Julia Scher, and Hito Steyerl.
Readings and class discussions will be in English.
Examination Modalities
Students are required to do the readings, attend class, and actively participate in class discussions. For each class, students will write and post 100-300 word responses to the readings. Each student will prepare a presentation on one text or artwork from the syllabus, summarizing key ideas, offering questions and discussion prompts, and facilitating a class discussion.
