VALIE EXPORT, Brigitte Kowanz und Co. : Künstlerinnen im Aufbruch

Renée Gadsden
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art Theory
2023S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04642

Description

This seminar is an homage to my late professor Brigitte Kowanz (1957-2022). The focus of the course is Austrian women artists of the 20th century. By looking at their contributions to the development of society in Austria, we can see how Austrian women and the themes they examined influenced important discourses locally and had an impact internationally, especially on the theoretical level.

We will look at pre-war artists from the beginning of the 20th century such as Tina Blau, Vally Wieselthier and Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, along with an examination of artists who were active from the 1950s onwards such as Maria Lassnig and Martha Jungwirth. The contributions of graphic artists and designers such as Maria (Kováts) Doppler and Helga Schenker, to Lotte Profohs, to Cordula Alessandri and Anita Kern will also be considered. Along with the well-known individual artists such as Brigitte Kowanz and VALIE EXPORT, we will look at lesser-known women artist collectives, from the Wiener Werkstätte era to DIE DAMEN in the 1980s and 1990s.

The objectives of the course are manifold: we want to become aware of the contributions of female Austrian artists to the canon of Austrian art history. We will analyze how Austrian society evolved over the course of the 20th century and will investigate the correlation of this development with the art that women produced over the course of the century. Finally, we will look at the resonance of women’s art in Austria internationally.

The seminar is based on art historical methodologies and will include excursions to studios of non-white Austrian women artists such as Pauline Marcelle, as a preparation for understanding the continued development of Austrian women’s art in the 21st century.
