Description

On the one hand, the research field of gerontology - the science of age(ing) - is inspired by feminist theory. At the same time, age as a category of difference, like gender and sex, is not yet really thought through, and the normative timelines on age also inscribe themselves in queer theories and practices.

Ageing itself, as Swedish gerontologist and gender studies researcher Linn Sandberg points out, is always thought of in binary terms, either as decline or success, that is, as decay, or as successful ageing, which equates to non-ageing. Both are entangled in ageism.

Ageism, which is the devaluation of aging, particularly involves a strong gender-specific component: the devaluation of age in women has a different weight than in men. Old women are, according to the common description, desexualized and no longer perceived 'as women'. Persons read as men, however, likewise lose certain gendered attributions.

This disconnection between age(s) and gender offers an exciting starting point for queering gender. In addition, hormone replacement therapy for *trans persons and persons in (peri)menopause is basically identical - and at the same time negotiated completely separately. The currently observable politicization of menopause - which is not called "the change" for nothing - especially along class and race, also offers an interesting approach for a queerfeminist engagement with that timeline called 'age'.

So how does rage get involved here? On the one hand, historian Pankaj Mishra has called the present an "age of anger," a diagnosis that has been criticized from a feminist perspective as gender-blind and at the same time taken up as highly productive. On the other hand, getting older is a thing - anger about ageism meets possibly other forms of anger and outrage, also political, at different stages of life. Or does it? At a minimum, however, RAGE describes receptors in the cell membrane that respond to AGE, glycated proteins that arise in the human body due to aging, among other things.

The seminar will include: wild cross-reading, from Thomas Mann's menopause novella to queerfeminist theories, Mishra's social theses, Preciado's pharmaceutical pornography theses, trans-revenge sci-fis like Torrey Peter's "Infect your friends and your loved ones" or Yvonne Rainer's film "Privilege" (1985). And - discussions and shared search movements, transversal and queer.
