Description
During the years of National Socialism, art and artists were massively instrumentalized for propaganda purposes and put under rigid state control. With the founding of the Reich Chamber of Culture, located in the Propaganda Ministry headed by Joseph Goebbels, the regime established guidelines to control and, if necessary, censor or destroy future and past art production. Through the critical analysis of primary texts and with a focus on visual arts, the seminar will trace the basic characteristics of the National Socialist understanding of art. Ongoing internal conflicts (e.g. with regard to the understanding of modernism) will be discussed, and special attention paid to the National Socialist exhibition system (e.g. "degenerate art").
Examination Modalities
Class attendance is mandatory from the first unit onwards - the seminar will be progressive in content, therefore continuous attendance is required; active participation and preparation of the reading assignments; presentation incl. handout and written final paper.
Comments
The seminar will be held in a co-teaching format by Bernadette Reinhold and Christina Wieder. Registration in both courses is therefore required. Max. 15 pers.
The seminar will be held in German.
