Description
How can we measure the world? Where do colours come from? What is the composition of the air we breathe? How does our vision operate? How can we understand the world around us? In order to unlock the secrets of the world and our perception of it, the phenomena of nature must be observed and investigated through experiments and instruments, Francis Bacon emphasised in the 17th century.
Following this dictum, the seminar is dedicated to the development and popularisation of experience-based natural sciences in the 17th and 18th centuries in terms of the history of science, but also in terms of the history of knowledge. In this context, scientific apparatuses play a central role, which are manufactured in an artful manner and used in scientific experiments. They enable scientists to explore the invisible phenomena of the world and to make physical knowledge visible and tangible. In terms of media theory and discourse analysis, these same scientific findings and their apparatuses will be examined in visual media while their influence on modes of representation will be worked out in terms of art history.
Examination Modalities
Regular attendance, close reading of the seminar texts and participation in the discussions. In addition, a presentation is to be given which leads to a written seminar paper.
Comments
Excursions to the Technical Museum and the Josephinum are planned.
The seminar can also be attended as a BA seminar.
