RESEARCH QUESTION: How can the motif of the dumpling, with all its cultural peculiarities and tradition-laden conventions, be used as an interdisciplinary mediation basis for technology and design?

Boiled, steamed, fried or baked; dumplings combine craftsmanship, technology, design and, in the best case, good taste. But as we all know, you can't buy "good taste". That's why it's best to take care of it ourselves. In the LV Translate I we take the perfect dough through the wringer, knead it into more or less homogeneous masses and fill them with everything we consider significant for it. For us for teaching and as a concept for future teaching.

BACKGROUND: The influence of design in the food industry is steadily increasing. Between conscious consumption, empty supermarket shelves and cheat packs, we get to the bottom of these motifs and develop interdisciplinary mediation concepts based on the most diverse varieties from the cosmos of dumplings.

From industrial production, from the manufactory of a family craft business or simply from grandma. Dumplings pass through very different production lines with very different techniques. Some of their kind are even illegal according to the local legal code, as confirmed by the discovery of a dumpling network in Vienna in 2019. The "drug" dumpling nevertheless enjoys cult status in a wide variety of regions around the world; it thrives on its idiosyncrasies, its ingredients, its taste and its traditions.

But what does the future of the dumpling look like? Does it offer opportunities for innovation, evolution and perhaps even revolution? There are no limits to the question of translation.

The starting point for this course is the participating students' own creative activity. This is to be translated into an art didactic mediation idea for the subject of art and design / textile & technical work. These developed concepts are presented and discussed by the participants in the group and a scientific pro-seminar paper is written on them.

Examination Modalities
