Description

In order to gain a practical insight into the UN human rights system, this class will simulate the Universal Periodic Review, the UN's most important and universal monitoring procedure before the Human Rights Council. This review will deepen the knowledge of students on both the UN Charter-based system and UN treaty-based system of human rights.

For the simulation, students will be divided into different groups representing the country under review, other states participating in the review, civil society, and the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

13 March: Introduction to the UPR and division into groups

22 June: UPR Simulation

Examination Modalities

Students will be evaluated based on their participation and performance during the UPR simulation. After the introduction on 13 March, students will work in groups to prepare their presentations for the final simulation on 22 June. More instructions will be given in the first class on 13 March.

Please read the two documents uploaded before our first session on 13 March and familiarize yourself with the Human Rights Council and the  UPR.
