Digital tools have also left traces in public educational institutions that cannot be easily removed. Raw material extraction, production, operation and disposal of ICT hardware take place under massive economic and physical exploitation of workers and without consideration of long-term ecological perspectives. Due to planned obsolescence, hardware currently has a mostly short lifespan. Software environments are also characterised by closed proprietary tools and their distribution increasingly takes place via a software-as-a-service rental model.
In addition to these structures of a high-tech capitalism in software, hardware and infrastructure, do modes of action exist that consciously reflect the context of their production and tools and shape them differently? Are there approaches for an (artistic) practice that thinks about its production conditions? How could civil society demands for supply chain laws be embedded in educational institution? Are the accesses of open tools (in the sense of commons as free/libre open source software) also deployable and adaptable in art education? How and where does the operation of a communal "technical" infrastructure work?
In the course with exercise(Vorlesung und Übung), the focus is on a critical understanding of tools as software, hardware and infrastructure. Last but not least, it will be debated in which way public educational institutions like universities, schools,... can contribute to and reflect on a collaborative maintenance of (digital) tools!
Attendance and active participation in the debate!
The lectures will be held in English or German, depending on the lecturer.
The course is thematically a continuation from the winter semester. It is possible to join in the summer semester. The course always takes place on Fridays from 13:00 to 14:30 and, due to student request, online via Zoom. The exercise part (workshop) will physically take place on a Saturday!
Participation in the course is possible for everyone!
