Description
This course will investigate the materiality of language from the complementary perspectives of structuralism and psychoanalysis. Drawing from major texts by Sigmund Freud, Roman Jakobson, Claude Lévi Strauss, Jacques Lacan, and Frederic Jameson we will trace the predominant intellectual themes within the mid-20th century concern with formalizing and analyzing the structure of language. We will pose basic questions about the structure of meaning in language, the materiality of language, and the structure of the unconscious.
