Description
This course will engage in a close reading of Sigmund Freud's seminal work The Interpretation of Dreams. This major work was fundamental not only in the inception of the practice of Pscyhoanalysis but has been a touchstone for philosophy, literary criticism, and art theory of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Over the course of the semester we will work through the text in its entirety, alternating between lectures and seminar discussions as the means of collectively reading the text.
The aim of this course is not only to read The Interpretation of Dreams but to reflect on the practice of close, critical reading. As we work through this important text, we will reivew the practices of exegesis and critical interpretation.
Examination Modalities
Students will be required to present a close reading of a selection from the text once during the semester and to submit a term paper of 10 pages, due at the end of the July.
