Description

Translate, she said....

This seminar asks the following question: What is the relationship between thinking and translating? Or, to put it differently: to what extent does the encounter with the multiplicity of languages color certain philosophical questions in a new and different way? This shift concerns both the relation of truth and language, of philosophy and literature, of linguistic community, nation and geography. Three such moments may be mentioned here.

-A concept is always both word and concept, which is precisely what comes into play in translation. Since languages are not congruent, translation allows the rupture between truth and its expression to be addressed as a moment of truth itself.
- Translation explicitly brings to bear an inner strangeness of the proper, in that in its translation a work lives on outside itself, without resemblance to itself.
-The loosening of a language's constants through the shifts that translations bring to bear on it can also potentially destabilize the social relations that are fixed by those constants.

This seminar will develop its theme through the elaboration of texts by Luther, Rosenzweig, Hölderlin, Benjamin, Bahktine, Ortega y Gasset, among others. A detailed calendar and bibliography will be given in the first session.
