Polemics and philosophy
MOTTO: it is impossible to agree to disagree, since any consistent disagreeing entails undoing the basis on which agreement could ensue.
The surest sign that „consensus“ (the obligation to remain within a set of unquestioned conditions) functions as the dominant discourse today can be seen in the way polemics are dealt with. Polemics are considered as overheated, insensitive to existing feelings and disturbing to all normative aspect of discourse.
This, however, is precisely their contribution, since polemics, when they are not reduced to an exchange of opinions, necessarily displace the existing framework of thought. This is also why philosophy, politics, literature are unthinkable without polemics.
This seminar will examine the inherent trait of the polemical in philosophy and attempt to work out its stakes, questioning its inherent link to politics understood as a logic of dissensus.
How does rivalry work, what distinguishes the enemy from the opponent, how does rhetoric intervene in polemics, when is criticism a polemical procedure, what determines it as a crossing of boundaries ? Through polemics philosophy marks again and again, not only internal rivalries, but the external border, thanks to which it separates itself from doxa in all its forms: sophism, ideology, consensus, laziness of thinking. It runs through rhetoric, style, antagonism, comedy.
This seminar undertakes readings that interrogate polemics in both its ancient, modern, and contemporary forms. It will also include references to literature.

Prüfungsmodalitäten
A short five to ten page essay will be required, which will deal with the texts read in the seminar.
There is another option, choosing one of these two essay questions:
1/How are polemics innerly divided by the problem of distinguishing truth and opinion?
2/ how do polemcis cross and connect several fields of discourse?
