Art Encounters – Places and Faces

What makes up the character of a city, what gives it its face? Architecture, institutions, infrastructure, topographical and geopolitical location. But also the people who live there, who have moved in or are staying temporarily - individuals and communities who shape urban life with their ideas, concerns and actions. The course focuses in particular on cultural Vienna.

In weekly field trips we get to know different places and protagonists - places where culture is conveyed, places where art is shown; places of collections, of the public, places where art is created. We wander through the city to discover all this and discuss what is currently shaping the city's cultural profile. We visit exhibitions, studios, project spaces and sharpen our perception of the many creative moments in public space, from art-in-building to square design, memorials and monuments to temporary interventions.

The course addresses first year students in particular.

Regular, active participation is compulsory. Participants should document and present one place, one person, one work of art in public space that they consider to be directly part of the city portrait.

Either in English or German, depending on the requirements of the group.
