Description

Digitality and ecology – how can they go together? How could an artistic mediation between these two, admittedly immense, complexes look like? And where exactly would a yet to be defined “eco-digitality” have to start in order to promote a transformational process in a positive sense?

Climate catastrophe on the one hand, advancing digitization on the other – and virtually no connecting idea in-between. This was the standard constellation for a long time: on one side, an advanced technology whose environmentally harmful downside receives little attention; on the other, the attempt to grasp an object that is far too large by human standards (“the ecological” or the “hyperobject” of climate). Here, a driving cultural force that until recently seemed little interested in aspects such as sustainability or ensuring survival; there, the often technology-skeptical struggle for the big picture – the more-than-human interconnection of all life forms including their respective environments.

The seminar wants to go back behind this apparent difference and look for a constructive mediation between the two areas. Concrete starting points are the following questions: (1) Is it possible to hold on to a concept of the digital as an expression of smart, clean immateriality? (2) What approach is possible on the part of a contemporary more-than-human ecology to highly technical information and media dispositifs? (3) Do media possess their own kinds of ecology, and if yes, what exactly is their nature? (4) What is the relationship between digital modes of production (and reception), natural resource consumption, and “extractivist” thinking? (5) On the art side, how can ecological issues be reflexively and “non-extractivistically” incorporated into creative work? (6) What constructive role can artificial intelligence applications play here, especially in relation to problems of sustainability that cannot be solved “humanly”? (7) What new, as yet unimagined configurations could the eco-digital help generate beyond glossy fictions?

We want to explore all this in jointly developed, multi-perspectival thought movements. With an emphasis on movement, beyond any (mono-)disciplinary limitation.
