We have been assisting to a growing interest from many contemporary artists on examining the tactile qualities of image and objects, as a critical response to the excess of visuality that defines today's visual culture. In particular, the current social physical restrictions imposed by the pandemic have positioned touch in a so-called higher crisis level, conferring even more urgency to the discussion of haptic interaction. 

A large number of artists employs multisensory strategies of affection that call for the engagement of the spectator's body in the process of experiencing art. Digital video, interactivity and the use of tangible interfaces can represent an important asset in this context by accepting in a new model of an active spectator, one having a key role in the artistic process. This lecture will focus on analysing ways of employing haptic interaction models by analysing several body affection strategies, and suggesting the human perceptual system as a privileged medium for experiencing new art forms.

The participants will be encouraged to create their own interactive installation projects by playing with Arduino, Processing, DIY sensors, and haptic feedback interfaces.

Regular attendance, active participation and the development and production of a prototype is a prerequisite for obtaining a mark.

Examination: 80% attendance; Literature study and preparation of project; Research material with design and schematics; Short text explanation of the project; prototype.
