Visualität und Sprache II

Maximilian Geymüller
Institute of Fine Arts and Media Art, Transmedia Art
2023S, artistic Seminar (SEK), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S02729

Description

The second part of the seminar retains the structure and at the same time deepens the examination of the specific intersection of visuality and language in the field of art: In the theory/reading part, texts are read, presented and discussed together, supplemented by three block units with joint exhibition visits, through which the respective own verbal reflection in relation to what is seen is to be activated and challenged.

This time, the theoretical part will focus on exemplary works: recent historical as well as contemporary artistic positions that operate at the intersection of the pictorial and the textual. For example, we will deal with George Brecht, Yoko Ono and other Fluxus artists who developed event scores in the 1960s and onwards, i.e. precise written instructions according to which actions and performances are to be carried out. With this tradition in mind, we then present the work of Darren Bader as a contemporary counterpart of such score works. We also take a closer look at the multiple works of artist and fashion designer Cinzia Ruggeri as well as the image-text-sound hybrids of Tony Cokes.

Furthermore, we devote ourselves to a specific linguistic figure that also occupies a central position in the field of the visual: the allegory. In contrast to other forms of signs such as the symbol, which aim to establish an unambiguous context of meaning, allegory stands for ambivalence, ambiguity, and even the postponement and prevention of meaning. These characteristics were and are also of interest to artists. As an example, we will look into the recent past of Austrian art and contrast the symbolic Viennese Actionism with the allegorical works of Franz West and Heimo Zobernig.

This year's program includes visits to exhibitions at the Secession, the mumok, the Kunsthalle Wien, the Belvedere 21 and various Viennese galleries.
