Art History: Lectures on Representation (Kunstgeschichte als Kulturwissenschaft)

Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2022W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S51230

Description

The aim is to illustrate, on the basis of concrete examples, how visual imagery in conjunction with relevant discourse and social practices in fact produces certain conceptions that are generally viewed in an essentialist fashion as being simply natural and inevitable. The examples used will span the period from antiquity to the modern era. The topics will include: Conceptions of God; Ideas of Death and the Hereafter; Body Constructs and Gender Constructs; Emotions; Nature; Utopias; and others. It is hoped that the lecture series will also contribute to developing a reflective and critical attitude both towards the topic areas covered and towards the methodology of art history.
