100 Boots: Art and the Capitalist Economy of Desire

Description
The title of the seminar - 100 Boots - is borrowed from the eponymous Mail Art piece by American artist Eleanor Antin (1979). Antins work challenges and questions the definition of an artwork as a commodity in the economy of the art market. The Mail Art piece depicts a fictious journey of 100 black rubber boots through the American landscape: searching for a job, being on the job, travelling, crossing streets, shopping and waiting in lines. These are some of the activities evoked by the arrangements of the boots. Proceeding from Antin`s work and it`s foundation in Institutional critique and Feminist accounts of the 1970s confronting the art’s status as a commodity and consequently its entanglement with the capitalist economy of desire, we will explore contemporary artistic practices that reflect and undermine these dynamics.

- written seminar paper (English or German)
