"Speculated Away"
Speculating as an activity of thinking in the future perfect tense and as a visionary imagining of other pasts, presents and futures is currently (due to the pandemic) increasingly joined by the subjunctive, the form of possibility. Looking back, we have to say: We assumed it could’ve turned out differently. But solid forecasts that didn’t come true need not have been wrong. Extending and limiting room for action is happening simultaneously. This opening up of speculative space of the indeterminate and uncertain is appropriated in particular in queer-feminist theory and art practice as a form of emancipation, while at the same time pointing to an economic-material dimension.
We will approach this topic through the following possible questions, among others:
Distortions: How does queer, feminist, anti-racist, decolonial speculation position itself as situated and distinct from supposedly 'neutral' and 'academic' forms of speculative thinking, e.g. in so-called 'speculative realism'?
Negotiations: How do contemporary gender studies position themselves in relation to seemingly outdated emancipatory speculations of various historical feminisms – and who might gain what by renewed referencing?
Exploitations: How does queer, feminist artistic speculation position itself in relation to neoliberal logics of a 'creativity’ that serves to perpetuate present and historical unequal distributions of wealth? What artistic and/or activist strategies could be used to address incorporation?
Usages: How do academic writing, artistic-speculative storytelling, and political activism relate?
Written exam on January 18, 2023.
