2022W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04382

Description

Kathryn Yussoff, who coined the term Black Anthropocene, already asked in 2013 about the "where, when and who of climate (representation)". Climate change is not only a question of science, measurements, diagnoses and forecasts; it is also a matter of politics, society and culture. The resulting "new cultures of climate change" take place in "imaginative framings," according to Kathryn Yussof and Jennifer Gabrys. This concerns, on the one hand, futures, strategies of adaptation that focus on the here and now and everyday life, rather than outsourcing climate change in time and space, and new ways of producing knowledge in climate science, in which art, design, and ('hard') science try to come together. Of particular interest here is the idea of futurity. The "arts of futurity" equally encompass the scenarios of forecasting by, among others, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, speculative finance, and speculative narratives of coming catastrophes: "The arts of this futurity are anticipatory, preemptive, and promiscuous." There are fictions of the future that function as risk protection, in which security policy and derivatives trading (weather is a financial asset!) come together, alongside those that play on the imaginary space of the present, here above all, with Susan Sontag, as the "aesthetics of destruction" or "disaster," and again fictions of the future that make the it conceivable in the first place. This seminar deals with these different futures: derivatives trading, weather forecasts, speculative fabulations (SF, thus with Donna Haraway also speculative feminism), the history of climatization/air conditioning and the concept of scenarios.

Languages of the seminar: English and German.

Examination Modalities

Will be announced in class

Comments

The seminar will be bilingual - there will be texts in German and English, and the discussion will make room for both languages. However, at least a passive understanding of both languages is required. "Fluency" however is not a prerequisite.
