Description

From Multidirectional Memory to Multidirectional Moments focuses on exploring how assumptions about memorialization can be questioned and seeks to explore how artistic approaches can contribute to the co existence of different memories in the public sphere without canceling each other out.

Here in Austria, most spaces and forms of remembrance share the common characteristic of being bound to a physical site. Their sheer size and presence in public space inherently shape the public sphere surrounding them, especially when the role of historiography is considered in relation to issues of representation, repression and visibility. Treated as physical facts, they are often quite literally tied to the histories they represent; defining the public discourse surrounding them, and thus not leaving space for other memories from less powerful agents to co-exist in the public sphere.

Throughout the course we will collectively investigate how how dominant memory regimes and its collective representation in the public sphere can be challenged through an Multidirectional approach
in order to allow different memories can co-exist in the public sphere without canceling each other out.

The course will move between research, site visits, discussions, crit sessions and a final presentation.
