Introduction to Eco Cinema

Bori Máté
Fine Arts and Media Art, Media Theory
2022W, Proseminar (PS), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04312

Description

Being ecological, becoming more conscious about human activities on this planet, and examining the relationship between humans and non-humans are contemporary topical issues. On an (eco)philosophical level, they deal with existential issues of posthumanism by posing such questions as: What would a world without humans look like? How do things interconnect? How do we process the possibility of our own disappearance as a species?

Evoking the American film theorist, Scott MacDonald’s concept of eco cinema this seminar aims to present experimental and documentary films that can be seen as tools of developing a “more environmentally progressive mindset” by offering an alternative to conventional spectatorship. The cinematic works discussed in the seminar intend to capture the entangled relationship between humans and non-humans and they also offer the possibility to re-think (as in thinking it over and over again) how we perceive our being in the world by highlighting relations rather than separation.  Throughout this seminar we will explore what the term “eco cinema” can mean, as well as, explore critical/theoretical tools to approach cinematic works that deal with ecological questions. We will have the opportunity to discuss concrete examples of eco cinema and delve into the various aspects and questions they raise about ecological issues and knowledge producing. The seminar will consist of the close reading and examination of certain theoretical texts, and of watching and discussing short experimental and documentary films in film theoretical and new materialist/eco-philosophical contexts.
