Description

Dear Students,

This lecture deals with the following organic materials which play a role in arts and crafts:

bones and antlers

horn

feathers

leather and skins (fur)

teeth, ivory and ivory-like materials

eggshells

mollusc shells and pearls

corals

insects

silk

fossils

plant material: wood, straw, bast, bamboo, fruitshells and seeds.

The last of the lectures will take place as an excursion to the Vienna Natural History Museum.

During the lecture you have the oportunity  to see and touch the mentionned materials - as far as they are available - and to see them in a stereo microscope, if necessary.

Additionally I will show yoy samples of these materials in form of small objects of art and crafts.

You will also find an extensive illustrated script in German on these subjects at the "base".

The lecture will take place on Mondays every 2nd week, starting with Mon, Oct 10, 3.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Salzgries, Konservierung-Restaurierung, lecture hall  in the 3rd floor.

The days of the lecture are:

Oct, 10: Introduction, bone, antlers, horn

Oct, 24: horn, leather, feathers

Nov, 7: teeth, ivory, ivory-like materials

Nov, 21: mollusc shells, fossils

Dec, 5: corals, eggshells, bezoar (gastrolith), insects

Dec, 19: plant materials

Jan, 1: Excursion to the Vienna Natural History Museum (3.30 p.m. - 5.45 p.m.)

Examination Modalities

The exam will be oral at the ed of January or the beginning of February.

Please count with 15 - 20 minutes for each exam.

You will be informed about date and hour in due time or we arrange that personally.
