Documentation is a central component of conservation work. All information important for the conservation treatment of an object must start before any measures are taken and must continue throughout the entire working process. Consequently, documentation means obtaining and keeping information. In addition to written documentation, mapping, i.e. the graphic recording and interpretation of information, explains complex relationships precisely at a glance.
The basics of documentation and mapping in the field of conservation are taught. Which possibilities of graphic documentation (analog and digital) can be used practically and meaningfully in the field of activity of a conservator and which criteria must a mapping fulfill with regard to understanding, client, etc.?
In addition to the historical development of documentation in conservation, there will be an introduction to different methods - such as hand drawings, graphic and image-supported analog, digital representations, complex mapping systems, and specific software. The aim of the course is to apply and further develop the acquired (drawing-analytical) skills in own project work.

Assessment of learning progress is done through meetings during the course. The performance assessment is to be done in the practical exercises during the semester. Criteria for performance assessment are discussion and participation as well as a final presentation of a mapping exercise conducted during the semester.
