The aim of this lecture is to understand ‘wood’ as a material from the perspective of conservator-restorers. The principal components of wood, its structure, various types of wood and physical, chemical and biological properties of wood relevant for conservator-restorers will be explained. The history of wood as a support for paintings, the influence of changes of relative humidity on the wood behaviour and its consequences for damage of paint layers will be discussed.
After completing the course, the knowledge of students will be evaluated in the form of an oral exam or written test.
The lectures will take place in the lecture hall at Salzgries 14, 1st floor or on-line per zoom (depends on Angewandte COVID-Betriebsmodus). The lectures will be held in English.
