Fine Arts and Media Art, Digital Arts
2022W, artistic Seminar (SEK), 1.0 ECTS, 1.0 semester hours, course number S02785
This time demands fundamental new and also paradoxical utopias.
The course is an invitation to participate in the project "morphoPoly", designed for several years.
"morphoPoly", at the same time city and game, is the setting of such a paradoxical utopia, because it is not a city of wishful dreams, but also a testing ground for dealing with conflicts in urban space, with planning and unplannability, with competition and, above all, with the fragility and dynamics of urban existence.
Participation can consist of both theory building, discussion, reception, and actual "hands-on" building sessions.
There is also a particular focus on the incorporation of video mapping and the projection of plan models.
A multimedia archive will be generated on the website, morphopoly.org, which will include photographs, time-lapse sequences, video documentary and audio.
"morphoPoly" is a research project that integrates multiple groups and generations into a building process.
Since Sept. 2021, a team of children ages 8-11 have created a dense model of the city using mixed materials (wooden blocks, paper, natural materials, paints, etc.) that can be viewed in Project Room 010.
This model will be dissolved in the spring of 2022. By then, from photographs to "story telling" to digital scans that can serve as the basis for 3-D prints, there are many heterogeneous documents that can serve the continued life of this version of the city beyond its first physical appearance.
At the same time, however, every transfer of the medium also means a transformation of the city. Its density and structure, its informational design, can both grow and shrink.
The LV will address both these media transfers, this "proliferation of archives," and the redesign of further haptic versions in "hands-on" building sessions. As a crucial element to connect the building groups and city versions, we are working on a "gamification" of the building process by means of playing cards, among others. Optional is the participation in excursions to urban development areas (e.g. Nordbahnhof, Seestadt Aspern etc.), which are confronted with the city models (by means of mapping, story telling etc.).
The jointly created city models and the documentation of the creation process will be shown at the "Angewandte Festival" and further developed on site.
There will be two preparatory meetings and then joint implementation dates, which will be agreed upon at the first two meetings.
