Overview of the development of the so-called arts and crafts (applied arts/technical arts) from the Middle Ages to the 19th century based on major works in various materials (metal, ivory, glyptic, wood, ceramics, glass). The students should gain an understanding of the relevant artistic and technical factors, the historical classification, the function and meaning of objects as well as the scientific approach to the object itself (correct terminology and descriptions, etc.). Participation and discussion is expressly asked.

For each unit, the students receive a "handout" with illustrations and information on the objects discussed. There will also be a list of relevant literature on the topics discussed in the lecture.
