Description

OTHER MATTER

INFO:

This course is consistent of 2 parts. Receiving one ECTS from each part/instructor - Bence Pap & Valerie Messini. Students who have applied before the 15.02 will automatically be transferred to both parts of the course and no action is needed. Students registering after the 15.02. will need to register themselves for both parts.

Does architecture always need to be physical? What ways of spatial expression, notation, extension, and new awareness can be achieved and designed through media? And what role could AR play in (re)programming space, especially in exhibition design and design methods?

In this course, we will investigate the possibilities of virtual and augmented space populations through the playful use of digital technologies. Together with the students in collaboration from various departments, we will look at different approaches of immaterial architecture in order to develop ephemeral, audio-visual objects, structures, or installations that stand in dialogue and emulate new experiences in relation to an existing architectural context.

The course will teach and introduce students to:

  1. conceptual development of spatial strategies and thinking
  2. use of new/old media (3D, video, images) in innovative ways  for the development of installations
  3. the use of XR as a medium of implementation
  4. further, the course will include a field trip at the beginning of the seminar to Heft.

The outcome of the course will be shown as part of an exhibition about the Austrian architect Günther Domenig scheduled for summer 2022 in June extending over four venues, amongst them the Heft in Hüttenberg in Corinthia.

Examination Modalities

Regular attendance and active participation in group discussions. (30%)

Each participant is asked to give a presentation (10-15 min) and hand in an exhibit until the End of May. The exhibit shall be a spatial investigation and critical examination and design proposal within the context of the Heft using AR/VR for implementation. (50%).

Each participant is asked to provide feedback (verbally or 500 words) to one other work (20 %).

The outcome of the course will be shown as part of an exhibition about the Austrian architect Günther Domenig scheduled for summer 2022 in June extending over four venues, amongst them the Heft in Hüttenberg in Corinthia.
