Collecting the ‘Uncollectible’ - Das Sammeln des "Nichtsammelbaren"

Julienne Lorz
Art Sciences and Art Education, Expanded Museum Studies
2022S, Lecture and Discussion (VD), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S04191

Description

In principle, everything is collectable, but how do you deal with the ephemeral, oversized objects or even the immaterial? How do you deal with actions, performances or installations that are directly linked to the existence of artists; fragile, technical, digital materials that (one day) will no longer be produced or are subject to technological progress; or flexible formats that can be interpreted differently? How can the original spirit of a work of art, or the legacy of artists be preserved? How do you deal with works of art that have become ethically, politically and socially unacceptable? And how do museums, archives and other institutions decide what is worthy of being collecting - for eternity?

These and other topics will be examined on the basis of concise examples and augmented with occasional guest lectures.

Examination Modalities

Attendance (min 80%), active participation in the discussion as well as oral examination at the end of the semester.
