From Fanon to Simone : Black thought and culture as cornerstones of creativity. 

Black thought and culture and their crucial impact and influence on art and design is either overlooked or underrated in mainstream European academic and artistic cultural institutions. This workshop/course is designed to re-center and take inspiration from several Black key thinkers and creatives who have contributed to modern thinking whilst also offering important alternatives to eurocentric, elitist, patriarchal, “scientific”/ “academic”,  binary ways of knowing, thinking and therefore: creating.

As a curator and cultural producer focussed on art, artivism and social justice, Tonica Hunter takes students through several theoretical frameworks of queer/intesectional/feminist/decolonial/radical thought. Together we will go through examples of, and discuss, how the consideration and/or application of such viewpoints in the arts (in various media and across disciplines) have and can continue to produce truly inclusive and progressive methods to create and connect to one another as well as re-examine structures which are indubitably central to art and design. This will be a key starting point from which to develop students' projects and ideas with novel, polyphonic perspectives.
