What is a Thing?

The term “thing” can apply to anything that exists… and also to those that don’t. The thing is even present in nothing. Perhaps we can reformulate the question in this way: what is not a thing? A person is generally considered not to be a thing. The same can be said of a place. In this course we will read a number of texts from the fields of psychoanalysis and phenomenology that deal with the question of the thing.

Within the field of psychoanalysis, the thing is part of a theory of judgment, a theory of how the thinking subject comes into being in thought, which is always in relation to a thing. To explore this set of ideas, we will read a section of Sigmund Freud’s early text, The Project for a Scientific Psychology along with a reading of this text from Jacques Lacan’s Seminar on The Ethics of Psychoanalysis. Additionally, we will look at texts by Melanie Klein, who formulated the problem of the thing as an object-relation.

Within the field of phenomenology, the thing is thought through a number of distinctions: the distinction between Objekt and Gegenstand, in the philosophy of Edmund Husserl, or the difference between Erscheinung and the Ding an sich in Kant. To explore some of the phenomenological contexts of the thing, we will read Martin Heidegger’s essay What is a Thing?

We will also discuss several filmic representations of the thing, including but not limited to the two films simply titled The Thing.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

Students will be expected to deliver in class presentations and to submit a final paper of 5-7 pages at the end of the semester.
