Material Culture II: Waste & Materiality
Faculty: Univ. Prof. Alison J. Clarke and Sen. Sc. Michelle Jackson-Beckett
This course explores global topics on waste and materiality in design and artistic practice from the nineteenth century to the present. Garbage––the material stuff that humans throw away––is a continuously pressing concern, as climate change and the pandemic cause people all over the world to consider global supply and delivery chains, as well as the ecological footprints of state and multinational corporations across industries of product and industrial design, fast fashion, and air travel, among others. From the role of graphic design in data visualizations of climate change to zero-waste fashion construction methods, and corporate product design repair programs, students will engage with a range of design criticism, digital exhibitions, and public history projects, as well as news media and film. In this course, students will read primary and secondary sources, actively participate in classroom discussions and online discussion boards, and complete a class presentation (Referat).
Learning Outcomes
Students will learn:
A seminar grade requires regular, punctual attendance (7 out of 8 sessions, plus 1 tutorial) and completion of the assignments:

- 5 short written responses of 200-300 words posted to the online discussion forum on Canvas (30%)
- Class presentation (Referat) with accompanying reference images and/or audiovisual material. Submission of typed presentation notes and visuals for credit. Presentation topic must be requested by email to the instructor within one week after the first session. (50%)
The final deadline to submit online discussion forum responses and any outstanding assignments is 9 June 2022.
