Beschreibung

“Virtual Reality projects frequently promise experiences so realistic you won’t believe that you are in VR. I’m interested in the opposite” […]
these emerging technologies can be used to capture the abstract, the confusing, the hidden, the complicated (Claire Hentschker)

Declining the idea of “digital dualism”, the lecture reflects on our contemporary Reality as one in which the virtual informs the physical, and vice-versa.
Over the course of 2 semesters, “Digital Design and Virtuality I & II” theoretical examples and practical exercise will help the participants in questioning the idea of self, identity, body and space by embodying the virtual, re-mapping and re-structuring the physical and performing within a (new) Hybrid Reality.

This (second) semester will focus on immersive and interatcive virtual space. Using Unity3D, we will create Virtual Reality Experiences for either desktop VR (Valve Index) or untethered VR (Oculus Quest).

Focused on the materiality of the digital, in its experimental and three-dimensional form, the course provides a practical insight on available open source and low-budget tools to create digital and 3D content for the arts, always accompanied by screening of existing artworks dealing with the specific topic. As theoretical support, the lecture provides an historical overview of relevant Interactive, Mixed and Virtual Reality Art as well as sessions to experience Virtual Reality Artworks from some contemporary artists working (when available).
