Description

Overcoming Alienation: The Unity of the Arts and the Primacy of Individual Creativity

Modernism is the arts‘ divided response to industrialization. The techno-euphoric fraction within the art community uncritically adopted the normative and anti-individualistic promise of a machine-driven culture and proclaimed that „mechanization takes command“ (Sigfried Giedion). The critical fraction on the contrary tried to overcome the alienation brought about by industrialization’s radical division of labour and specialization. One of its strategies to create meaning was to defend individual creativity and crafted production against the anonymity of industrial products. Applied to all arts, this would lead to a comprehensive environmental design united under the primacy of individual creativity, shaping a happier new society. The lecture course explores examples of this believe throughout the history of modernism up to the present. It investigates sustainable and realistic strategies of creating meaning in environmental design renouncing esotericism.
