Salt and Water - Visual Intervention in the "Salzkammergut" Capital of Culture
Every year, a few cities in Europe are awarded the title of Capital of Culture. An impulse to renovate forgotten places, to initiate festivals and exhibitions, to inspire guests and natives for local culture and to raise hidden potentials. For 2024, the Salzkammergut region was chosen together with Tartu (Estonia) and Bodø (Norway). The choice shows that city and country have long since ceased to be so clearly separated in the age of digital nomads. Culture takes place in all places and can be experienced directly everywhere. The heritage with the tradition of salt mining and the summer retreat of the emperor next to the hyper-tourism in Hallstatt strikingly show the tension between regional roots and global transformation in the Salzkammergut.
Imagine the soul of the Salzkammergut = salt and water - what would the packaging design look like beyond uniform tourist expectations? How could the conflict between lonely idyll and overtourism be brought to the point? Can it be discussed visually based on social media? Would the emperor be seen on a stamp for the cultural capital Bad Ischl? What does the image of absolute tranquillity on the mountains look like and how can the incredibly rich 4,000-year-old Hallstatt culture be transformed into today? Along the four main themes of the "Capital of Culture" we explore the visual identity of the region of city and country, translate it communicatively and design possible communicative contributions for 2024. Those who find affinities to Tartu and Bodø in terms of content will draw a bow to our common Europe.
The impact and visual-communicative power of the intervention, the development steps up to the final presentation and the personal commitment are evaluated.
