The seminar gives an overview on interrelations between the transport system and human behavior. Starting with mass motorization and the radically changed use of public space the paradigm shift in transportation planning within a few decades is discussed. The car-oriented reconstruction of cities changed long-term economic and social structures of society. Contradictions between car-oriented planning and sustainability goals are becoming increasingly obvious. The necessary transformation of the transport system requires a fundamental understanding of complex system interrelationships and their effects as well as an interdisciplinary approach. Adequate tools to understand complexity and effects of transport policy interventions and strategies are introduced. A decision on future transport systems is connected with the question of livable cities and settlements. Successful examples of settlement structures harmoniously integrated into the local community, regions linked by public transport and attractive cycle paths between communities show, how economic and ecological resources can be responsibly managed in terms of a sustainable transport system.
