Beschreibung

 

Money is often viewed as a neutral medium of exchange, a unit of account, store of value or means of payment. It can however also be regarded as a powerful motor for reorganising social relationships, cultural norms and conceptions of value.

This course will provide students with an introduction on theories of money, the anthropology of finance, and contemporary transformations of money not only in the West, but also in the global South. Discussed themes will include the history and contemporary manifestations of money and debt, shell economies, gift economies, digital currencies, derivatives and futures.

 

Students will be expected to prepare readings for each lecture.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

The course will be examined based on a presentation (50%) as well as a written assignment (50%) based on the syllbus and subject matters covered during the semester.

Anmerkungen

The seminar will be held in SR 4.

Students from other departments or universities will be given a place on the course subject to room capacities.

In case of a lockdown, classes will be held via ZOOM.
