„In ignorance we trust“

Thinking, Learning, Emancipation

Teaching language: English

„The Ignorant Schoolmaster“ (1986) of Jacques Rancière makes several heterodox statements concerning the relation between learning, thinking, and emancipation.

  1. Just as work does not make us free, knowledge does not make us free. It is not knowledge itself that emancipates. Any number of scholars are not emancipated. It is emancipation that makes out of knowledge something different than a hierarchical practice imbedded in capitalist division of labor, that turns it into an egalitarian relation.
  2. Equality is not fostered, but hindered by the ideal of progress. Such an ideal sets equality as the goal of reform, thereby infantilizing all members of society, which is held together by a logic of pedagogy. What is meant to bring about equality actually puts it off for later, and confirms the relation between knowledge and power.
  3. What does an equal relationship look like? How does it disconnect from inequality? This is exactly what Rancière explores, through a radical inversion. Equality is not posited as a goal, but as a starting point. What happens if one starts with the assumption of the equality of all intelligences? What asceticism follows out of that assumption? This what we will examine in the following seminar under following inversions : trust versus demystification, disorientation versus the search for the good, desidentification instead of appropriation.
  4. These inversions will be treated in their affinities and disruptions with and of both ideology and psychoanalysis.
