Beschreibung

This course deals with the concept of “extractivism”, a term comprised of capacious meanings. Extractivism is deeply interwoven with the current fabric of capitalist society and its conditions. Originally coming from the natural resource sector located in rural peripheries, the concept migrated into spheres such as data mining, transitions to green energy, labor or culture (to name a few). Closely linked to this concept are the “rare earth elements”, a set of seventeen chemical elements in the periodic table, that are the core components for products of the high tech sector. As such they play a crucial role in global economy.

Mainly circulating among academics and activists extractivism is often referred to as analytical term describing extractive activities, whereas within contemporary art practices the concept is rather employed as critique on historical and/or contemporary modes of accumulation. Alongside critical perspectives, we will also discuss “counter models” and alternative practices that developed in the communities from the global south.

During the course we will dive into different aspects of the “extractive model” and deal with artistic practices and strategies addressing various issues connected to the topic.
