Beschreibung

As an interdisciplinary incubator of ideas and experimentations accross media and fields of knowledge, this course invites students to develop artistic strategies within the framework of a core theme: « Politics of Representation and Strategies of Public Visibility ».

At the beginning of the Winter Semester, students propose art projects responding to the core them.

At the end of the Winter semester, students will present finalized project proposals and working plans.

The Summer Semester will be devoted to the production of their projects.

Collective production within the group is encouraged.

This annual main theme will allow investigating questions of representation in relationship with public space. Public space is to be understood here from a wide perspective, spanning from physical public spaces – including institutional - to public debate.

Issues of self-representation, agency, community engagement, collaborative practices, will allow students to engage with one of the major challenges of our time: how art can help us to envision new forms of civic imagination?

Case studies of artistic strategies in performance, discursive platforms, video and sound work, photography and mixed media installations will be investigated, deepening knowledge of the various fields and approaches.

As a part studio/part theory-based course, teaching includes reading assignments, presentations by students, screenings, and excursions. Conversations with guest artists will support students with shaping specific artistic strategies for their projects and to invite them to critically reflect on their own projects.

List of guests will be communicated at the beginning of the semester.

Course Goals:

  • to introduce and support students with the production of artistic strategies
  • to develop knowledge on artistic practices at the intersection with social dynamics
  • to foster critical thinking and communication skills

  • to introduce and develop collective practices
