Beschreibung
As the title of this course indicates by using the plural (“theories of the subject,”) the philosophical notion of “the subject” might be taken in many different senses; the subject has a number of theoretical contexts from the Subjectum in the philosophy of the Middle Ages to the rational subject of Modern philosophy, to the problematization of the subject in 20th century structuralism and post-structuralism. Rather than giving a survey of various approaches to the question of the subject, this class will focus on one particular debate around the inheritance of Descartes’ cogito. In Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy, he develops his infamous cogito, the “I think” which he linked with existence (“… therefore I am”). Descartes’ cogito is often credited with ushering in the rational subject of modernity, grounding the ontological certainty of the subject on the rationality of the “I.”
Throughout the course of our semester, we will develop a reading of Descartes’ formulation of subjectivity in his Discourse on Method and in the Meditations. We will then turn our attention to one important debate in 20th century French philosophy that has at its core the question of madness as the not so hidden underbelly of this rational subject of modernity. We will read the debates around the cogito between Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida as one important legacy of the Cartesian theory of the subject.

Prüfungsmodalitäten
There are two basic assignments for this course. Every student will deliver one short (5-10 minute) presentation. And the final exam will be one 5 page paper.
More instructions for these assignments will be given on the first day of class.
