Around 1800, European identity and culture was constituted as a figure of light emerging from Enlightenment, reaching back to Greek antiquity as the origin of civilization. But at the same time a completely different story emerges in the art and literature of Romanticism: sexuality and violence, gothic novels, myths and irrationality find their expression. The "terreur" of the French Revolution and the horrors of the Napoleonic wars, colonization and slavery, androgyny, man-made "monsters" and apocalypse loom in the art of Goya, Füssli, Girodet, Gericault and Delacroix as well as in the novels of Mary Shelley. At the same time, spaces of freedom open to female artists, to non-European identities, to androgynity and social utopias.
The identity of European culture emerges in the conflicting fascination with and rejection of the non-European "other", accompanied by orientalism, the Napoleonic art theft and monumental large-scale projects that are supposed to surpass the newly discovered pre-antique cultures. The seminar is dedicated to this dark, ambivalent Europe, whose broken identity is still a burden today: the Europe of Romanticism.
Examination Modalities
Verpflichtend zum Abschluss sind:
- regelmäßige Teilnahme,
- aktive Mitarbeit, mit Übernahme von Lese- und Diskussionsbeiträgen,
- Verfassen einer schriftlichen Arbeit zu einem Thema aus dem Seminar,
- zur Vorbereitung: Abgabe eines Exposés/einer Ideenskizze mit Literaturverzeichnis ca. November/Dezember.
Das Seminar kann auch als BA-Seminar (Studienfach Lehramt) belegt werden.
